What can AAUP do for me?
- Facilitate meaningful shared governance at SCC.
- Ensure that faculty have primary authority in curriculum design, delivery, and offerings.
- Ensure the highest quality of instruction by promoting the hiring of full-time tenure-track faculty.
- Advocate fair compensation for faculty.
- Ensure due process in grievance and disciplinary procedures.
- Promote and protect academic freedom.
What protection is there from intimidation/retaliation?
- If you become active in the AAUP, you are protected by Ohio law.
- In fact, you are more protected if you participate than not! (see the article in the second issue of our newsletter)
What can we negotiate?
"Wages, hours, terms, and conditions of employment"
- Promotion, tenure
- Disciplinary/grievance proceedings
- Curriculum
- Pt/Ft ratios
- Hiring of tenure-track faculty
- FPRs
- Faculty involvement in academic decisions
- Real shared governance
- Binding contracts
- Retrenchment policy
- Any other issues proposed by SCC faculty
Who does the negotiating?
- Local members choose their negotiators from among themselves
- Negotiators are then trained and supported by the AAUP
How will disagreements be settled in negotiations?
- Paid arbitrators (both sides provide funds to bring in neutral arbitrators)
- Some issues of contention may be put off until later contract negotiations
What dues would I have to pay?
- Once we organize into a Collective Bargaining Unit, we will set our own dues to be deducted from all full time faculty salaries. The lion's share of the dues stays locally to serve our needs. The dues are typically a portion of 1% of the annual salary. For example, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College collective bargaining unit set its dues to 3/4 of 1% of the annual salary.
- For simply joining AAUP a reduced annual membership fee of $102 is available for first time members, which can be paid on a monthly basis (see links below).

What if I don't like unions?
- There is no template for negotiations; the organization works 'bottom up'
- We set the dues
- We decide what issues we want to pursue
- There is no heavy hand from DC or Columbus
- We decide what actions we will take should negotiations break down with the administration
- In other words, WE are the union, they are not "in charge" of us.
